What Is Corrective Jaw Surgery?

Corrective jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) to correct a wide range of skeletal and dental irregularities.

Corrective jaw surgery can improve chewing, speaking, and breathing. This surgery not only dramatically enhances aesthetic appearance but addresses functional problems as well.

DiagnosisFor patients with misalignment of bite and difficulty chewing or biting food, corrective jaw surgery will resolve these issues. In a specific group of patients, chronic jaw or joint (TMJ) pain and headaches were also alleviated or decreased with orthognathic surgery. In patients with open bites (space between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed), this surgery can correct the deformity.

From an aesthetic point of view, the best chance to achieve a harmonious facial balance can be achieved with corrective jaw surgery. This can ultimately improve the facial profile in achieving an orthognathic (straight jaws) facial morphology. Once the jaws are properly aligned, the patients who struggled with closing their lips can bring their lips together in a passive fashion.

This will also help to change certain habits such as mouth breathing, which might require postoperative myofunctional therapy. Some of the patients who are referred to our practice have suffered from facial injuries or birth defects that have affected function and facial balance. Orthognathic surgery will also address those issues in helping our patients gain back a better quality of life.

Surgery

Our office will work with your dentist and orthodontist in a multi-specialty approach to determine the proper steps in achieving an orthognathic face for our patients.

It is important to be aware that orthodontics will play a major role in the preparation and success of corrective jaw surgery cases. The preparation may take several years to complete, which will be the duration prior to and after your surgical procedure.
