Total Joint Replacement

Joint Disorders (TMD, TMJ)

Case Study 1

What Is Total Joint Replacement?

TMJ total joint replacement (TJR) is an open joint surgery performed in patients who have intolerable TMJ pain and severe joint damage.  Most patients have failed multiple surgical and non-surgical treatments before arriving at this treatment plan. TJRs include replacing the condyle with metal, and the housing of the joint with polyethylene fused to the metal component.

This surgery requires two incisions.  An upper incision is made into the tragus region of the ear. A lower incision, which is made in a skin crease of the neck. In our practice, we take extensive pride in maintaining a small incision with plastic closure for a better aesthetic outcome.
