What Is Lower Jaw Surgery?
In some patients, orthodontics alone will not align the teeth and jaws into a harmonious and esthetically pleasing position. In those instances, orthognathic surgery is required to surgically reposition the upper and/or lower jaws into a correct anatomic position.
The upper or lower jaw is precisely cut and moved into a new appropriate position and stabilized with a plating system designed by Dr. Movahed. Depending on the patient’s specific pathology, along with other factors such as airway, previous corrective jaw surgery, occlusion, and degree of retrognathia, it may be appropriate to perform an upper jaw surgery alone, lower jaw surgery, or a combination of both simultaneously.
