Condition

Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS).

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a rare genetic disorder that tends to involve underdevelopment of the facial skeleton, cheekbones, jaws, palate and mouth which can lead to breathing and eating difficulties. In addition, affected individuals may also have a downward slant of the opening between the upper and lower eyelids (palpebral fissures) and anomalies of external and middle ear structures, which may result in hearing loss. The specific symptoms and physical characteristics associated with TCS can vary greatly from one individual to another.

About This Patient

Joanna had 12 previous cranio-facial surgeries and was suffering from severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Ankylosis. Ankylosis is fibrous adhesion of the anatomic joint components causing inability to open one’s mouth. She could not eat or speak properly and had extremely limited jaw function as well as a restricted airway. Her surgery was high risk due to a previous surgery’s leftover mesh endangering her eyes. Dr. Movahed performed a Lefort 1 Osteotomy, Genioplasty, and Genioglossus Advancement on Jonanna .
